Cracking the rice cracker…

16 Apr

There are so many rice crackers on the market – how do you choose the best one?

I don’t eat crackers of any kind often – mainly because they’re packed with food sensitivity triggers such as artificial flavour enhancers and preservatives (like most processed, pre-packed food) – but I’ve been having a mad craving for homemade beetroot dip so I needed crackers of course ; )

So off to the supermarket I went in search of the perfect crackers…

The choice is endless… oat, wheat, rice… BBQ, chicken, plain… etc etc…

I headed straight for the rice crackers mainly because they’re lower in calories and, if you pick the right one, FODMAP friendly.

But even among the various brands of rice crackers you’ll find stark differences. The main difference is the amount of additives… SO many additives like E631, E627 and hydrolysed wheat (which I’ve read is, to an extent, MSG in disguise!).

So… long story short… after reading list after list of ingredients, my FODMAP friendly rice crackers of choice are (in no particular order):

  • Ceres – sea salt (white rice flour, brown rice flour, sea salt)
  • Sakata – plain (rice flour, canola oil (not a fan), and salt)
  • Eatrite – tamari seaweed (brown rice, soy sauce, seaweed) – note soy sauce contains gluten.

The moral of the story… read the label! Not all rice crackers are the same… or all that good for you.
